USPS API Update July 2013

Posted by: Josh Friday, July 26th, 2013

USPS have released details of their forthcoming API update due on 28th July 2013.

If you don’t update your Magento installation you will stop receiving USPS rates for most services other than Standard Post, Media Mail and Library Mail.

WebShopApps have analysed the update and have decided to release a free patch to the community to ensure you can continue using USPS with the new API.

USPS LogoThe most significant changes the update brings are:

  • Rebranding of shipping methods, for example Express Mail is now called Priority Mail Express
  • Time in Transit estimates where available. For example you will now see something like Priority Mail 2-Day, Priority Mail Express 1-Day and so on.

We have qualified this against Magento 1.4.1 upto Magento 1.7 – you can download the extension via the WebShopApps site.

This extension is free and unsupported. If you require advice or assistance then we encourage you to purchase a support package.

If you are running Enterprise Edition then we recommend you download the official Magento patch in your downloads area on Magento once available.

If you are running the WebShopApps Dimensional Shipping extension please contact us for an update to this. If you are running Dropship, Handling Matrix, Shipping Override, or Shipping Insurance you may need to update your configuration to reflect the new shipping methods.

Thank you so much for this extension! It’s working great on our Magento site. And kudos for the update that removes the Priority mail 2nd/3rd day from the front end. Just one question. We’ve been using your Shipping Override extension, and I noticed that some of our shipping groups are no longer working. Does the CSV need to be updated to reflect the new USPS shipping names?

  2. Josh says:

Hi Scott, great to hear this has helped you out. Thanks for the feedback. You will need to update the CSV file, all references to anything starting with Express need to be changed to Priority Mail Express in the CSV.

  3. Raphael says:

It’s working great on our Magento 1.6.2 site. Thank you so much for this extension!

  4. Austin says:

THANK YOU! You just solved my multi-day headache! Super easy to install and is working like a champ on my Magento

  5. Jeanne says:

I installed the patch, but doesn’t seem to support the military option. or did I miss something?

  6. Sanjay says:

Thank you! It’s working fine in magento 1.5.1

  7. Tally says:

Thanks, but now I need to remove the extension, if I remove all the files, I get a crash that does not even register in the exception log. Any ideas?

Does this extension fix the international shipping? We have a client who’s website has stopped calculating international shipping rates, but it still calculates USA shipping rates.

  9. Josh says:

This patch does patch the international methods also, but if you’re not getting back any international methods at all at present, I don’t think this patch will resolve that. It sounds like there’s something else coming into play.

  10. Josh says:

Removing the xml file from app/etc/modules for this extension will totally disable it without any adverse effect. This will then return the USPS functionality to the Magento core code, which unless you’ve patched will not work with the new USPS API.

  11. Josh says:

It strips off the Military suffix from the shipping methods. It should be getting a rate to APO/FPO addresses, it just won’t append the word Military to the shipping method.

this patch is great, Anyone can tell me how to change the label name appearing in Store Front end? I want to add something like “(2-3 days)” following the shipping method. Thanks

  13. Karen says:

The easiest way is to change the description of the delivery method in the locale file.

  14. nick says:

    WOW….thanks Karen 🙂

  15. sher says:

I had the patch applied but it won’t show just the options I select, instead it gives every possible USPS shipping option. I have tried changing it, and have tried adjusting every possible shipping setting, but it seems to be all or nothing. Any advice?

  16. Zachary says:

Thank you for the extension. The Magento USPS patch wasn’t working at all for us. This worked instantly.

  17. Karen says:

You must have something else going on with the site then. The extension is working on thousands of sites. We do offer support packages if you need paid support.

  18. rob says:

after the magento patch crashed my site, i had to pay a pro to get it back to normal i used this patch. It worked within seconds. God Bless for the help. Thank you so much.

  19. I am so very grateful for this extension! I have had A LOT of customers complaining that they paid for “1 Day” or “2 Day” shipping. I then have to explain to them that the USPS only offers Priority Mail, and there is no guarantee. Also that we are a made to order garments company which means we don’t make it until its ordered. Which also means that we can’t ship something out as soon as it is ordered. (This is explained on our shipping/delivery page which we tell people to read & they just don’t read it even though we make them acknowledge that they agree to it before they can place an order? It has been beyond a hassle having to explain this over & over. Your extension took care of the problem in less than two minutes. THANK YOU!
